Kung Fury tog mig till Umeå!

Hej,

” Hej there, I’m Kris Hiew with Laser Unicorns Productions in partnership with Uminova Expression.  I never thought myself as a desk guy, but here I am writing this blog entry at our desk space in the Sliperiet building.  It really amazes me how we can go from A to B to C in life, and how you don’t really think about it until you’ve moved forward.  That’s where I think I am now at least, looking back at it all.

I am from San Diego, California originally and bounced around the USA in my 33 years. I’ve lived in LA, Texas, and NYC.   But San Diego is my home and where my father and two brothers live.  I ended up moving back there two years ago after mom got sick, which was the hardest event my family had ever faced.  We did everything we could to be with her the whole way but we lost her after eleven months to cancer.   I miss her, and I am forever grateful to have been able to take care of her with my family.  During that time, she constantly reminded me to travel after it was all over and of course… to get a job.  I can’t say that I’ve simply accomplished what she had in mind, but I will say it’s been a ride that’s she’d smile at.

About a month after my mom’s memorial a friend had messaged me about a Kickstarter project called Kung Fury, saying ”hey man, you gotta find them somehow, someway!”

I was immediately floored by the concept and the creativity like so many others.  I thought to myself, ”Hey, a T-shirt could be nice.”  So I backed it. But a few days later my real senses kicked in and I backed it to travel to Umeå and be an extra for a summer shoot, plus a T-Shirt.  Hands down, it was an an awesome experience with awesome people.

I went back to San Diego with the void good memories can make, but returned to Scandinavia in the winter to visit old friends.  A sushi party invite later and I was back in Umeå. With no job back home, I stayed for 2 months to help sort the massive response Kung Fury had received which was overwhelming and fun.  I was just honored to do it and glad to be busy.  Since then I returned in May to give the team rides to the Umeå Airport for the Cannes Film Festival, I never knew a driver’s license was a super power, so rare and a privilege to have in Sweden.  But I really returned to experience the premiere of Kung Fury thru and now back here again in a more traveling Communications role for the team. Personally I’ve never seen myself in such a role, but I really enjoy learning and being in a space surrounded by deeply loving inspiring people.  Sometimes you just can’t ask for more than that, and I feel that worth everyday when I get to spend time here in that community.  I ultimately feel to take things as they come and of course to have fun as you go.

There is so much to said about having a safe place, to leave a place, to return to a place, but I can honestly say a desk isn’t super bad.

Currently sitting down,

-Kris Hiew ”
