Den välkända läkemedel skyddar oväntat lungorna rökare
Narkotika i klassen statiner (statiner), kolesterolsänkande, kan hjälpa rökare – dessa läkemedel förhindra inflammation som orsakas av cigarettrök. Denna slutsats Walid Younis (Walid Younis) och hans kolleger vid Medical Center, University of Oklahoma (OU Medical Center).
Under det senaste decenniet, finns det bevis för att statiner inte bara lägre kolesterol och skyddar mot hjärtsjukdomar. Det konstaterades att läkemedel i denna klass hämmar inflammation, och resultaten av tester på djur tyder på att statiner kan skydda lungorna.

Forskarna undersökte medicinska journaler för 485 rökare och ex-rökare, med fokus på status för pulmonell patienter. Det konstaterades till exempel att personer som tar statiner minskar mängden ljus som varje år med endast 1%, vilket är imponerande i jämförelse med en 10 procentig minskning av "vanliga" patienter.
Statiner blockerar ett enzym som kallas reduktas HMG-CoA, som deltar i produktionen av olika fetter. Att blockera detta enzym sänker kolesterolet och minskar koncentrationen av molekyler som "slå på" inflammation som svar på stimuli som rök.
Resultaten av Younis bör kontrolleras under de mer rigorösa kliniska prövningar. Och om det lyckas, kan delvis förhindra rökare skadliga effekter av cigaretter med hjälp av piller, som redan har etablerat sig som en effektiv och säker. Inga andra läkemedel skyddar inte mot rök-relaterade lungskador.
Men forskarna påpekar att statiner aldrig kommer att vara lika användbar som att bli av med vanan.
