”Hello, Karl-Gustav,

Thanks for sending the link to your blog.  I agree that the US voter turnout is abysmal.  It had not occurred to me that the 40% becomes less when you consider the numbers of Americans that are citizens of voting age but are not registered to vote.
In several states in the US there have been efforts by government officials to make it more difficult – if not impossible to vote.  There are document photographic requirements that require a driver’s license or official state identification card.  In some states an official identification card from a state university is not sufficient, but a state concealed weapons permit is.
In Texas, people who do not drive are required to travel 3 hours from their residence to the nearest Texas office which issues state identification card; and they are only open during business hours so those who do not drive but do work must lose a day of work in order to obtain the identification card.

I have seen reports and heard of people who still had problems getting the cards because they needed to show a birth certificate; and they were born at home 70+ years ago and no certificate was ever issued to them.  Some of these people have been voting for decades and are now denied the right to vote.  Women have been denied because the name on the birth certificate is not the same as their current married name.

In Pennsylvania and North Carolina, state officials have been recorded as saying that the reason for restriction is to prevent people form the other political party from voting.  And in the US southern states is seems that the restrictions apply disproportionately to blacks and Hispanics.

I think that a computerized system such as Sweden’s would work in the US.  But there would be strong political opposition to it from the Republican Party, which stands to gain from low, restricted voter turnout.  They gained again yesterday.”
