”Hello, Karl-Gustav,
I have seen reports and heard of people who still had problems getting the cards because they needed to show a birth certificate; and they were born at home 70+ years ago and no certificate was ever issued to them. Some of these people have been voting for decades and are now denied the right to vote. Women have been denied because the name on the birth certificate is not the same as their current married name.
In Pennsylvania and North Carolina, state officials have been recorded as saying that the reason for restriction is to prevent people form the other political party from voting. And in the US southern states is seems that the restrictions apply disproportionately to blacks and Hispanics.
I think that a computerized system such as Sweden’s would work in the US. But there would be strong political opposition to it from the Republican Party, which stands to gain from low, restricted voter turnout. They gained again yesterday.”
